Our Tips

Each blog post looks at common mistakes, sometimes in grammar and sometimes in vocabulary.

#1 False Friend (Level B1)

Only one of these options is correct. Which one?

  • A.The company pretends to buy three new cars as soon as possible.
  • B.Charles pretends to be stupid but he isn’t. In fact he is very intelligent.
  • C.If you pretend to have more information, please contact us on 003-376001.
  • D.We pretend to move to Spain next year to be near my parents.

Answer

Only B is correct:

B.Charles pretends to be stupid but he isn’t. In fact he is very intelligent.
(Charles is pretending to be stupid, but he is actually very intelligent.)
The English verb “pretend” means “fingir” in Portuguese. It does not mean the Portuguese “pretender”. To express “pretender” in English, use “intend”, “would like” or “plan to”.

The other three sentences should therefore read:

A. The company intends to buy three new cars as soon as possible.
C. If you would like more information, please contact us on 003-376001.
D. We are planning to move to Spain next year to be near my parents.
